All you need for this trick is a sugar packet, quarter, and a black marker. There are no other special props or gimmicks required. This can be done with any signed coin, but quarters are usually best to leave space for the spectator’s initials. The coin must be marked by the viewer so they know it is in fact the same coin throughout the performance. Borrowing a quarter instead of using your own will make the viewer have more faith in the trick, so they know you’re not using a special coin. If you’re at a cafe that has multiple sugar packets, place them onto the table and also let the spectator choose one. Any moment they can feel like they have a “free choice” about the objects will help them believe in the effect.
Larry Anderson teaches the “Ultimate Utility Move” in this video, showing how to control which hand the coin is in during the trick. When the coin and packet become “fused together,” shake the sugar packet and bring it to your other hand, laying it on top of the hidden coin. Carefully tear open the packet and pour the sugar in their hand. They will be shocked to see their signed coin also fall out with the sugar! Make sure to watch the other tricks in this “Jawdroppers” series to build your confidence performing magic. Larry is a great coach who talks you through every step along the way.
