No weights, no wax, and no tape. The key is to cut out a vertical window in the front of the card case, giving enough room for your index finger to slide up and down. The spectator’s card is on the top of the deck and placed into the card case. Here’s where you can do any number of false shuffles to keep their card on top. Once the deck is inside the case, behind the viewer’s vantage point, you will move your index finger up, making their card rise.

This effect can also be done with a signed card. It’s important to remember you don’t want to put too much pressure on the back card, so only one card comes up at a time. There are many stories you can tell about a phoenix rising from the ashes; or how their signed card always wants to escape from the deck and have freedom.
